Prospective Parent Workshops at Equality Forum

May 1 2010 - 12:30pm

Join us as PFP presents two distinct workshops on the path to parenthood as part of this year's Equality Forum. Both workshops will take place at the Temple University Center City campus at 1515 Market Street. The room location will be announced the day of the event.

Babymaking in the 21st Century: Assisted Reproduction Options for LGBT parents [1] 12:30-1:45pm
A panel of experts and parents will guide you through the maze of options in using assisted reproduction to build your family, including: alternative insemination, sperm donors, and surrogacy, as well as important insurance issues, legal issues and more.

A fertility doctor, a lawyer, a sperm bank representative and LGBT parents who have successfully used assisted reproductive technology to build their families will come together for a frank discussion about the options available for LGBT prospective parents.

The panel will address alternative insemination, anonymous and known sperm donors and egg donors, surrogacy, insurance issues, legal issues and more.

The emotional, medical, practical and legal aspects of these arrangements will be explored so prospective parents can make more informed decisions about the right choice for them.

This panel is cosponsored by the Mazzoni Center.

Adoption Options: Not Under My Heart But In It [2] 2:00-3:15pm
A panel of parents and experts will assist prospective parents in understanding the options available for forming a family through adoption.

A family therapist who specializes in non-traditional families and adoption will discuss how to choose the best adoption path for you.  A social worker will explain the ins and outs of a home study and what is involved.

Same-sex parents who have adopted children through domestic agency adoption, international adoption, private placement adoption, inter-racial adoption and foster placement adoption will discuss their individual family journeys.

A representative from the National Adoption Center will also be available to distribute materials about a special LGBT outreach program and adoption agency accreditation to assess cultural competency for LGBT family adoptions.

Join us after the workshops for a special prospective parents happy hour [3] in the gayborhood.
